'2 Broke Girls' worth rooting for

Max Black and Caroline Channing, the main characters in CBS’s "2 Broke Girls," couldn’t be more different.

Max, played by Kat Dennings ("Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist"), is streetwise and sarcastic, while Caroline, played by newcomer Beth Behrs, is a perky, designer clothes-wearing, formerly rich daddy’s girl.

But, in the grand tradition of sitcoms, the odd-couple gals develop something resembling a friendship after Caroline comes to work at the Brooklyn diner where Max keeps everyone in line.

"Whatever that is, it does not belong in this diner," Max says about her new coworker, who shows up for work in all-white Chanel and lots and lots of pearls. "It belongs in a show on Bravo."

But Caroline is broke, and her daddy’s in jail, so she needs the job as much as Max does.

The show, which comes from "Sex and the City" creator Michael Patrick King and comedian Whitney Cummings, is so, so funny.

I cracked up at Dennings’ perfect, deadpan delivery and loved that Behrs was able to get some shots in, too, in a role that’s more than your stereotypical spoiled rich girl.

And Max shows a softer side during her day job, working as a nanny for a rich socialite whose twins are named Brad and Angelina (If the writers deny modeling her after stylist — and actual Bravo reality star — Rachel Zoe, right down to the maxi dresses and long, flowing locks, well, they’re lying).

Max also makes cupcakes in her spare time — you can’t get much more anti anti-establishment than that, can you? — and sells them at the diner.

By the end of the first episode, Max and Caroline have bonded over their doomed financial situations, and hatch a scheme: They’ll save every penny they can and open up their own bakery, where Max can sell her cupcakes.

Who knows how long that will take, but I’m glad to be along for the ride.

(Side note: I just heard that Behrs grew up in Lynchburg and was involved in Glass’ drama program before moving to California; I’m trying to track her down as we speak, so look for a story in the coming weeks.)
