I never got around to forecasting my Golden Globe picks, so I thought I should make a few educated guesses about who could win at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which air Sunday night on TNT.
Back when the nominations were announced, I complained about their randomness, and my feelings haven’t changed.
Patrick J. Adams, star of USA’s “Suits,” certainly shouldn’t be recognized alongside fellow best dramatic actor nominees Bryan Cranston (for “Breaking Bad”), Kyle Chandler (“Friday Night Lights”), Steve Buscemi (“Boardwalk Empire”) and Michael C. Hall (“Dexter”).
Why not the great Damian Lewis for “Homeland” or Peter Dinklage for “Game of Thrones?”
I also have to wonder how in the heck “The Office” was included as a best comedy ensemble nominee. The cast is packed with funny people, yes, but the show’s heyday was over awhile ago. “Parks and Recreation,” the funniest show on TV, should have been nominated in its place.
OK, enough complaining. Here’s who I think could walk away winners this weekend:
Outstanding Performance By An Ensemble In A Drama Series
Nominees: “Boardwalk Empire,” “Breaking Bad,” “Dexter,” “Game of Thrones” and “The Good Wife”
My take: This is a tough one. “Game of Thrones” was one of the year’s best new series (along with the ridiculously snubbed “Homeland”), and I’d love to see it recognized. But you can never count out the always-great “Breaking Bad” or critics’ darling “Boardwalk Empire.” The only series I’m actively rooting against is “Dexter,” which was uneven this season.
Outstanding Performance By An Ensemble In A Comedy Series
Nominees: “30 Rock,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “Glee,” “Modern Family” and “The Office”
My take: “Parks and Recreation” (I’m beating a dead horse, I know). But since it can’t win, I’m guessing “Modern Family,” which just took home the Golden Globe, will. A possible dark horse candidate could be “The Big Bang Theory.”
Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor In A Drama Series
Nominees: Patrick J. Adams, “Suits,” Steve Buscemi, “Boardwalk Empire,” Kyle Chandler, “Friday Night Lights,” Bryan Cranston, “Breaking Bad” and Michael C. Hall, “Dexter.”
My take: I haven’t seen the most recent season of “Breaking Bad,” but I don’t think I need to see it to know that Cranston is deserving. When isn’t he? I’m rooting for him or Chandler, who won the Emmy for the final season of “Lights.” Go Coach!
Outstanding Performance By A Female Actor In A Drama Series
Nominees: Kathy Bates, “Harry’s Law,” Glenn Close, “Damages,” Jessica Lange, “American Horror Story,” Julianna Margulies, “The Good Wife” and Kyra Sedgwick, “The Closer”
My take: I’ve loved Margulies and Sedgwick on their shows this season, but I’m guessing Lange, who won the Golden Globe for best supporting actress, just might take this one. “American Horror Story” is weird (and a lot of other things), but you can’t deny that it has buzz.
Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor In A Comedy Series
Nominees: Alec Baldwin, “30 Rock,” Ty Burrell, “Modern Family,” Steve Carell, “The Office,” Jon Cryer, “Two and a Half Men” and Eric Stonestreet, “Modern Family”
My take: I’d love to see it go to Carell, who was just great during his final episodes on “The Office.”
Outstanding Performance By A Female Actor In A Comedy Series
Nominees: Julie Bowen, “Modern Family,” Edie Falco, “Nurse Jackie,” Tina Fey, “30 Rock,” Sofia Vergara, “Modern Family” and Betty White, “Hot In Cleveland”
My take: Bowen won the Emmy for best supporting actress, and she could do the same here. But I’d like to see Vergara take it home, to spread the love around. She’s hilarious.
